Help is at hand on Council’s website for people living with dementia

Dementia small.jpgA new map has been added to Flintshire County Council’s website to support people living with dementia in the County.

The map shows the locations of dementia friendly communities, memory cafés and organisations and services which are part of a local dementia friendly businesses programme run through partners, NEWCIS.

Users will be able to search the map to find locations in their area, alongside bus stops and other community facilities which may help them to plan their journey. A street view option is also available, where users will be able to see an image of the location, helping them to recognise their destination and landmarks.

The map and user guide has been developed as a result of an idea by Zoe Robinson and officers in the IT department, after attending a session run by a dementia friends champion for County Council employees.

People living with dementia and their carers worked with the Council and NEWCIS to develop the map and a user guide as part of the Council’s commitment to further develop dementia awareness and support across the county.

Chris Roberts, a person living with dementia, said:

“This project is very innovative and will be so helpful for folk to know where and which establishments will make them feel safe and understood, especially in a time where we are all feeling very alone and isolated.”

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services, Councillor Christine Jones, said:

“This is a great addition to our website which we have developed for people living with dementia and their carers who struggle to find out what is available for them in their community.

“The pages bring together a range of information in to one place, acting as a directory of support services. People living with dementia and their carers, health and social care professionals and others will be able to go to this map to access helpful information.  The pages will continue to be updated as we learn more about local support.”

Flintshire County Council has been recognised as ‘Working Towards Becoming Dementia Friendly’ though the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Communities Programme.

Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Friendly Communities and Organisations programme aims to encourage everyone to share responsibility for ensuring that people with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community. This focuses on improving inclusion and quality of life through training and awareness raising within communities and organisations so they are better able to respond to the needs of those living with dementia and their carers.
