Beam signing at Castell Alun High School

Published: 14/12/2020

The Flintshire schools modernisation programme gathers momentum with a recent beam signing ceremony at Castell Alun High School in Hope.

The Council, from its capital programme, is investing almost £5m in Castell Alun High School for a new three storey Art and Design Technology block that will include specialist classrooms along with general teaching spaces, offices and toilets. The project also includes the demolition of the current technology block to create additional parking and a replacement of the roof over the existing music department.

This work will create a new and inspiring learning space for both students and teachers as well as providing employment and learning opportunities for our community.  The total investment is just over £7.6m.

The contractors, Willmott Dixon, began work in October 2020 and the work is due to be completed by early 2022.  To date, the works have included laying foundations for the new build, drainage works, tarmac and line of a coach car park.

The steel beam has now arrive and its installation is a significant milestone for the project.

The Deputy Leader of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Carolyn Thomas, said:

“The Council continues to work to provide a high quality sustainable education for all our learners. It was pleasing to visit Castell Alun High School to see the construction of the new building starting to take shape, the developments at the School will transform the learning facilities on offer and I look forward to seeing the work completed by early 2022.”

Head teacher at the school, Paul Edwards, said:

“This exciting new learning block is being built to a high standard, to provide modern, first class facilities and the best learning opportunities for our learners and the wider community. I look forward to seeing this building develop over the coming months.”

Anthony Dillon, managing director in the North for Willmott Dixon, said:

“We are very proud to be playing our part in creating these exciting new facilities which will provide pupils with the very best environment to learn and develop.

“We believe in delivering brilliant buildings, transforming lives, strengthening communities and enhancing the environment so our world is fit for future generations; Castell Alun High School is a project that supports every one of those goals and we are committed to investing with local supply chain partners wherever possible as well as creating new local employment opportunities.”
