Tackling loneliness and social isolation at Christmas

Published: 19/12/2019

Flintshire County Council’s domiciliary care provider, Premier Care Plus, is donating a Christmas feast for their clients who are facing Christmas alone.

The organisation has been running The Christmas Dinner campaign for the last three years and this will be their biggest year yet.

This year, the campaign will provide 25 older people with a traditional three course Christmas dinner delivered straight to their door by their carer on Christmas eve, ready for Christmas day.

Premier Care Plus has also asked Flintshire County Council’s in-house domiciliary care providers to nominate older people for a lunch on Christmas day if they are alone. Through this, the company hopes to spread some Christmas cheer.

All of the meals will be gifted by Premier Care Plus, and cooked by staff volunteers within the company.

Premier Care Plus’s owner, Nicki Hopwood Clarke, said:

“A visit from a carer can make a huge difference to our client’s lives, especially on Christmas day. They are absolutely delighted when they also receive a hot three course Christmas lunch and brings so much happiness and joy.  This is another example of my staff going over and above for the clients they support."

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Management and Assets with responsibility for Social Value, Councilor Billy Mullin, said:

“It’s great to see our social care providers going the extra mile for our residents. Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year for many people, especially for those who will be alone. This is a great initiative, and a fantastic example of our providers going above and beyond. We’d like to thank all of those who support vulnerable people over Christmas.”

Local Flintshire resident, Mrs Jones, is receiving a meal this year, and said:

“I may not have seen anyone if it hadn’t have been for my carer. I received a full Christmas lunch last year by my carer and really looking forward to it again this year. I got a full turkey dinner, even a cracker. I was overwhelmed as I wasn’t looking forward to Christmas, but it made me so happy and enjoy Christmas again.”

Premier Care Plus, based in Oakenholt, provides social care for adults with a range of needs including; older people and individuals with dementia, learning disabilities, sensory loss and impairment and mental health illnesses.
