Sarah’s 100th birthday!

Published: 16/12/2019

The Chair of Flintshire County Council has helped another Flintshire resident celebrate a special birthday.

Councillor Marion Bateman and her Consort Councillor Haydn Bateman met Sarah Platt at Croes Atti Residential Home in Flint.

Sarah, whose maiden name was Hooson, was born on 8 December 1919 in Flint and was the eldest of two children.  She left school aged 14 and trained as a hairdresser, opening her own salon when she was just 17.  Her salon was where the old Plaza cinema used to be in Flint.

At 15, she learnt to drive and during the war she was called on to drive ambulances and trucks in the WAAF.  She met Norman, her husband, during the war and they had two children Margaret and Brian.  Norman sadly passed away aged 44 in 1962 and Brian passed away in August 2017.

Sarah has five grandchildren Helen, Fiona, Paul, Sarah and Vanessa who live in Ireland and also has six great-grandchildren. She used to enjoy cooking and baking and taught her grandchildren how to cook.
