Published: 09/03/2015

A regional forum, which brings young Gypsies and Travellers together with key decision makers in education and children’s issues, took place recently. The Travelling Ahead Regional Forum is hosted by Save the Children and consists of young Gypsies and Travellers from Flintshire and Wrexham supported by Flintshire and Wrexham Traveller Education Service and Flintshire Youth Service. It took place at the Youth Centre at John Summers High School in Queensferry. The Forum was joined by the Deputy Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Eleri Thomas; Flintshire County Councils Chief Officer for Education, Ian Budd, and the Head Teacher of John Summers High School, Paula Stanford. The Deputy Children’s Commissioner also took time to congratulate the Flintshire young Gypsies and Travellers who are also part of the Inspirational Traveller Dimension Group, on the work that they do for their local community, which includes raising money for local and national charities. Councillor Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “This was an excellent event. During the day the Forum worked to explore Gypsy and Traveller education. It was a great opportunity for young Gypsies and Travellers to discuss issues that affect them with some of the key decision makers in the county and beyond.” Sarah Davies from the Flintshire Traveller Education Service said: “Overall, everyone had a really entertaining day. In the afternoon, the young people also enjoyed a trip to the ice skating rink.” Image Pictured are children from the Travelling Ahead Regional Forum with representatives from Flintshire County Council, John Summers High School and the Deputy Childrens Commissioner, Eleri Thomas
