Connah’s Quay High School

Connah’s Quay High School welcomed visitors recently to show off its newly completed building – Phase 1 of the current improvements taking place at the school.

Visitors included local County Councillors, Connah’s Quay Town Council, Kier Construction, Welsh Government and Flintshire County Council officers.

Construction of the new building began in August 2017 and has centred around the replacement of the existing Design and Technology (D&T) block and Art and Food Technology block which have been replaced with a new two storey building comprising D&T, Food Tech, Art and Design and room for additional teaching provision, office space, toilets, lift, stairs and a plant room.

The work forms part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme and follows the successful completion of Holywell Learning Campus and Deeside 6th Form College.

Phase 2 will be a continuation of the project with Kier Construction. The works will be external cladding, replacement Sports Hall roof and demolition of existing administration block and refurbishment of accommodation to provide a new administration area.

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Youth, Councillor Ian Roberts, said:

“This much needed modernisation of the school is of a high standard and the school will now enjoy modern, first class facilities and the best learning opportunities possible.  The Council remains committed to investing in the future of our children and young people. We continue to work to provide a high quality sustainable education for all our learners.”

Head teacher, Ann Peers, said:

"This fantastic building will provide our school with the facilities to deliver effective 21st century education at a time when it is most needed. Everyone at the school is very excited to see the completed work and we can’t wait to move in!"

Peter Commins, Managing Director Kier Construction North West said:

“Completing phase one of the new educational building for the school is the first milestone in providing the students with top quality educational facilities which will assist them in realising their full potential. I would like to thank the school, Flintshire County Council, Welsh Government, our supply chain and everyone concerned with the project thus far. We look forward to delivering phase 2 and thereby completing the modernisation of Connah’s Quay High School.”

Education Minister Kirsty Williams said:

“I’m delighted to hear that Phase 1 of the work in Connah’s Quay High School has been completed.

“Investing to make well-designed schools that are safe and energy efficient is at the heart of the 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, ensuring that our schools are able to meet the needs of our learners, teachers and the wider community.

“The fantastic new facilities demonstrate our commitment to improving provision of Design and Technology subjects, which are a key part of the Science and Technology area of learning in our new curriculum.”
