Armed Forces Covenant

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Members will be asked to endorse the positive progress made in meeting the Armed Forces Covenant when they meet later this month.

They will also be asked to approve the Armed Forces Covenant Annual Report prior to publication.

This is the second Annual Report of Flintshire County Council’s Armed Forces Covenant - a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

The Council is committed to supporting the Armed Forces community by working with a range of partners who have signed our Covenant, including Flintshire Local Voluntary Council and the Royal British Legion. A multi-agency steering group has been established and Councillor Andrew Dunbobbin, Flintshire’s Armed Forces Champion, is the chair of this group.

Key achievements include:

  • completing 77% of actions set out in the plan including developing  webpages on the Council website for the Armed Forces Covenant, and developing an e-learning module to increase employee awareness of the needs of the Armed Forces community;

  • receiving the Silver award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for the Council’s Veteran friendly employment policies and practices;

  • demonstrating commitment to the Covenant by promoting Reserves Day and Armed Forces Day;

  • appointing Regional Armed Forces Liaison Officers (one for North West Wales and the one for North East Wales);

  • The Liaison Officers have delivered training to the Mental Health team in Social Services to raise awareness of the needs of veterans, enabling them to provide more effective services.

Councillor Dunbobbin said:

“We are extremely proud of what we have achieved to date, but we are not complacent.  Over the next 12 months, we will capture the profile of our customers who are members of the Armed Forces community to enable our services to improve their support to them.

“We have also committed to publishing an annual newsletter to keep the Armed Forces community up to date with our progress.

“Our two Liaison Officers have completed a mapping exercise of the Armed Forces community in North Wales and over the next 12 months they will focus on addressing the gaps identified.”
