Council honours Merchant Navy Day

Flintshire County Council raised the Red Ensign today, 3 September, to mark Merchant Navy Day.  The Council takes pride in showing support for seafarers on which the UK depends.

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day has honoured the brave men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars.  We also celebrate our continued dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK's imports, including much of the food we eat, most of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted.

Flintshire County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Andy Dunbobbin, said:

“Flintshire County Council is committed to the Armed Forces Covenant.  In tribute to the commitment, bravery and self-sacrifice of our current and former seafarers, we are proud to raise the Red Ensign to support Merchant Navy Day. 

"The Merchant Navy has an important part to play in our history as a nation and continues to safely deliver vital supplies to our shores.”

Chairman of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Paul Cunningham, said: 

“Flintshire County Council is proud to stand with other organisations in supporting our Merchant Navy.  We have been observing Merchant Navy Day for some years and raising the Red Ensign is our annual recognition of our support for them.”
