Connah’s Quay High School modernisation

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet is to consider a report at its meeting on Tuesday, 22 May which seeks its support to take forward the second phase of the modernisation work currently underway at Connah’s Quay High School (CQHS). The Cabinet’s support will enable detailed design work to be undertaken by Keir Construction whilst the Phase 1 construction work continues. Kier Construction began work on the first phase of the modernisation work at CQHS in early 2018 and the project is progressing well. The current work centres around the replacement of the existing Design and Technology (DT) block and Art and Food Technology block (AFT) which will be replaced with a new two storey building comprising administration, DT, AFT and space for additional teaching provision, office space, toilets, lift and stairs. Work on this phase is anticipated to be completed in December 2018 and forms part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme. The Phase 2 proposals include re-modelling to provide a new administration area and the demolition of the existing administration block, additional car parking, sports hall and main façade upgrades (including a new roof for the Sports Hall) and agreed packages of smaller refurbishment works. A continuation of capital investment in Connah’s Quay High School was part of a number of projects contained in the Council’s Strategic Outline Programme (SOP) submission for Band B of the Welsh government’s (WG) 21st Century Schools Investment Programme. The SOP for Band B has been approved in principle by WG and a paper outlining the onward investment programme was considered by Cabinet in January 2018. Subject to appropriate approvals, design development would be undertaken from June 2018 to December 2018 with Phase 2 construction proposed to commence in January 2019. Cllr. Ian Roberts, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth said; “I am very pleased that the modernisation programme for Connah’s Quay High School continues to build momentum with the proposals for Phase 2 of the project which reflects the Council’s commitment to providing high quality sustainable education for all our learners. The developments at the school will transform the learning facilities on offer in Connah’s Quay. Cllr. Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council said; “The new learning block is being built to a high standard and will provide first class facilities and the best learning opportunities for learners and the wider community and I am confident that fantastic progress will continue to be made over the coming months.”
