Holywell Learning Campus wins again

The state-of-the-art Holywell Learning Campus has won a national award for Flintshire County Council and its contractor, Galliford Try. The new school won the Sustainability Award at the recent Constructing Excellence National Awards held at the London Marriott in Grosvenor Square. This followed on from winning the Sustainability Award at the Constructing Excellence Wales (CEW) Awards in July, due, in part to the fact that more than 50,000 tonnes of site soil was reused for landscaping, representing 99.9% of soil reuse on site. The site also recycles rainwater to flush the toilets and has 250 solar panels on the roof to generate electricity. Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Youth, Councillor Ian Roberts, said: “From the start, Galliford Try ensured that sustainability was embedded in every aspect of the project. The demolition of the old high school left a huge amount of waste but an incredible 90 per cent of on-site demolition waste was reused. Not only that, but the project secured 55 employment opportunities and 19 apprenticeships as well as many educational and community activities.” Ian Jubb, Managing Director of Building North and Scotland, said: “The Holywell team deserve considerable credit for what has become an exemplar project for the business. This further award demonstrates that their achievement is truly exceptional and we hope that the lessons we have learned there will be applied elsewhere, with sustainability at the heart of what we do.” The CE national award ceremony is a national celebration with the 108 regional winners, such as the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards held in July, all joining together to showcase best practice and reward achievement across the UK construction sector. The winners of these awards are the very best of the best, typically the whole CE Awards process involves over 500 organisations from the whole supply chain - the private and public sector; micro; SME and large; contractors; designers; professional advisors; clients; suppliers - anyone and everyone that is part of constructions extended family. Milica Kitson, CEW chief executive said: This was a great night for Wales and confirmed that we are a centre of excellence for construction and an example to anyone adopting collaborative working practices. It is a testimony to the commitment of the teams working within, but it goes further than that. Wales consistently punches above its weight. It points to the strength of the desire within Welsh construction to keep on improving. Congratulations to our Welsh winners!
