Flintshire County Councils Cabinet will on 18 October be asked to consider progress of discussions regarding the Nercwys VA school review which forms part of the Council’s school modernisation programme. In June, Cabinet determined that officers could carry out a soft consultation of the school because it had met a number of triggers for review, including low number of pupils and condition of the school buildings. A series of meetings have taken place with the school governors and the Diocesian Authority which have looked at all options. The governors have indicated that they are willing to pursue formal federation arrangements. In light of this, all parties feel that it would be best to pause the review to allow more time to look at options for collaboration which would support a sustainable school network. Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Chris Bithell, said: The County Council is carrying out a challenging programme of school modernisation. The Council also recognises that reviews such as this one are challenging and sensitive for all involved. We welcome the willingness of the school governors to look at federation. We know that reviews can cause uncertainty in the school community and so, it is important that we provide support to ensure that the school can focus on continued education improvement.”
