Using Lateral Flow Tests correctly
Published: 11/05/2021
Flintshire County Council would like to remind parents that Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs) are not a replacement for a PCR test.
A PCR test must be booked by anyone who is displaying symptoms of Covid. These tests are sent to a laboratory to be checked.
Lateral Flow Tests cannot detect very low levels of coronavirus in a sample as it is not as sensitive as the PCR test. The LFT therefore may give a false-negative result and give false reassurance that the person is “Covid free”.
If your child should display any of the following 3 symptoms:
• a high temperature
• a new, continuous cough
• a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
A PCR test must be booked. In such instances a Lateral Flow Test must not be taken. You and anyone you live with should stay at home until you get your test result. Only leave your home to have a test.
To book a PCR test please follow the following link: gov.wales/getting-tested-coronavirus-covid-19
You must also inform your school, employer or childcare provider immediately.
Also, please do not send your children into school if there is anyone at home with Covid symptoms or awaiting the results of a PCR test.
We thank you for your cooperation with regards to this matter and for helping schools keep your children safe.
