Old dairy to make way for new homes

Preparations for the demolition of an old dairy building on Mold Road, Connahs Quay and eight adjacent properties (nos. 149 to 159) on the towns High Street are underway. The council has held a long term ambition to regenerate Deeside and declared a Renewal Area covering parts of Connahs Quay, Shotton and Queensferry in 2010. As part of this work and with funding from the Welsh Governments Specific Capital Grant for Renewal Areas the Council began to acquire these properties for demolition. The properties were chosen as they represented a key site in Connahs Quay, many were vacant and most were in very poor condition. Through the support of the Welsh Governments Vibrant & Viable Places funding programme, under which the council was awarded £6.042m in January 2014 , the final property was acquired in March 2015 enabling the Council to move forward with the redevelopment of the site. Demolition work will be completed the end of March and the site will then be treated with top soil and grass seeded. The Councils strategic development partner for the Strategic Housing and Regeneration Programme (SHARP), Wates Living Space, have been asked to look at the site and develop some proposals for consideration later this year. Cllr. Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council and local ward member said, Building work on the first new council homes in over 20 years is set to begin in February just up the road from the old dairy on the site of the former Custom House Lane School. This is the first development under the Councils ambitious housing plans and I am very pleased that the old dairy site on Mold Road will also be available to help meet our plans to provide new homes which will comprise 200 council homes and 300 affordable homes over the next five years. This site has been derelict for many years, its demolition and redevelopment will assist the regeneration of the Town in this location. Cllr. Bernie Attridge, Deputy Leader and local ward member said, This site will the provide the opportunity to develop more new, affordable homes that will be of high quality and available to local people, helping to stimulate further regeneration and bring a much needed uplift to this area of the town.
