Council house development close to getting underway
Published: 07/01/2016
Flintshire Council’s ambitious plans to build new social and affordable housing
across the
county were given the green light in December after planning permission was
granted for 12
new council homes in Connah’s Quay on the site of the former Custom House Lane
School
off Mold Road.
The Custom House development forms part the Council’s Strategic Housing and
Regeneration Programme (SHARP), which will see 500 new homes built across
Flintshire over the next five years and Wates Living Space, the Council’s
strategic housing partner, will begin construction in February 2016 with
completion by February 2017.
The scheme’s design will be high quality and will meet the the councils
Flintshire House Standard and Secured by Design. It has been driven by the
appearance of the former school and it is proposed that construction materials
will complement the surrounding area .Other materials and features that are
proposed include contrasting blue facing brickwork features and courses that
imitate features that existed on the original school (natural stone cills /
heads and stone detailing such as date stones) and features recovered from the
school.
The development boundary will comprise of wrought iron railings on a facing
brickwork dwarf wall.
Cllr. Helen Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing said:
“The regeneration of this site will enhance the housing opportunities available
to local people living in Connah’s Quay and mark the beginning of a very
exciting period for the council in realising our long-held ambition to provide
new and much needed quality affordable housing across the County.
Cllr. Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council said:
I am delighted that Flintshire will be the first Council in North Wales to
start on site with a council house building programme. The Council is committed
to tackling the housing crisis head on in 2016 and I am proud that the first of
the council houses to be built in a generation within our County are to be
built in Connahs Quay .
The proposals for the Custom House scheme will be considered by Flintshire
Council’s Community and Enterprise Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday
12 January
