Rebate Scam
Published: 10/11/2014
Flintshire County Council Trading Standards team has received reports of a
number of phone calls to Flintshire residents, claiming to be from Flintshire
County Council and informing residents that they are due a rebate. One resident
was informed that their property had been re-banded and they were due a refund.
This is a type of Phishing scam aiming to get bank details and Flintshire
County Council wants to make it clear – you would not be contacted by telephone
if you are due a rebate, or refund.
The Council would write to residents or the amount would automatically be
refunded from any bank details the Council already has on record.
Flintshire Trading Standards would like to remind residents not to pass on any
personal or bank details to any telephone cold caller without thoroughly
checking the authenticity of the caller. Use a telephone number obtained from a
trusted source – not from a number provided by the cold caller.
Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Waste Strategy, Public Protection
and Leisure said:
“I’d urge all residents to be on the look out for this and other types of scams
and criminal activities as we approach the festive season. If you’re unsure of
something please don’t give out any details and report any incidents to the
relevant organisations or call Trading Standards.”
Please report any incidents to Consumer Advice on 03454 04 05 06.
