School Meals team at festival
Published: 15/09/2014
Flintshire School Meals team will be promoting healthy eating at the Mold Food
and Drink Festival by holding a live final of the ‘Come and Cook’ competition.
Children from across the County have been taking part in the qualifying rounds
since Healthy Eating Week in June with the finalists giving a demonstration of
their cooking abilities on the mobile Cooking Bus at the event on 20 and 21
September.
Pupils were invited to submit their own recipe designs for the competition
which is aimed at raising awareness of the nutritious balance of school meals
and promoting local produce. The recipes had to involve a minimum of two
locally sourced ingredients; consist of a main and a dessert course taking no
longer than 1.5 hours to prepare and cook; provide a balanced meal and the
ingredients should cost no more than £5.
Children from primary schools Ysgol Llanfynydd, Ysgol Glanrafon, Ysgol
Gwenffrwd and Ysgol Penyffordd and secondary pupils from Castell Alun and
Argoed High Schools will take part in the cook off competition.
Over the weekend Flintshire School Meals Service welcomes pupils and children
to come and take part in age related cooking sessions on the bus with the aim
of encouraging children to be confident cooks and raise awareness of Flintshire
School Meals. The Cooking Bus is open 10am to 4.45pm and admission on the bus
is free.
Councillor Chris Bithell Cabinet Member for Education said: “What a great way
to promote healthy eating by getting the children involved in not only cooking
the meals, but planning, sourcing ingredients, the budget and how to provide a
healthy balanced meal.
“Good luck to all taking part and I’d encourage everyone to visit the mobile
Cooking Bus to sample the fantastic food on offer.”
